The community came together to help clean up the island on Saturday the 15th of September for the annual Clean Up the World event. The event was carried out between two local NGOs, Naifaru Juvenile and Eco-Youth, divers from Prodivers at Kuredu resort and two divers from the MNDF.

Prodivers from Kuredu initially took the initiative and invited NGOs from Naifaru to a meeting discussing the prospect of doing a day of cleaning on the island. They agreed to provide divers and material if the NGOs would mobilize local volunteers.

On the day, which was a huge success, there were more than 100 volunteers and we gathered several truckloads of garbage. Some was collected by divers and snorkelers in the harbour and some was collected on land in the immediate area surrounding the harbour.

The local community school, Madhrasathul Ifthitaah, sent several children from grade 10, 11 and 12 to help. The volunteers were organized into work teams of roughly five people with one NGO member and one staff member from Prodivers.

The cleaning event was followed up by an awareness session at school where the divers from Prodivers lectured about responsible waste management and marine conservation for more than a hundred students from grades 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12.
