We are one of our community’s oldest and most active NGOs and we work to create a stronger community through projects that involve or affect all the people of our island.
At Naifaru Juvenile we work hard in creating an organization with modern management strategies and planning, and we have been able to recruit enthusiastic members that work diligently for the development of the organization, our island, and the atoll.
We strive to earn a good reputation for the island and atoll in order to create an environment that people can be proud of and want to be a part of. We want to make sure that the people of our community have ways and means to earn a substantial income so that they can live lives without poverty. This will be completed through community projects on various scales from supporting micro-business to funding larger construction projects to build the infrastructure needed to sustain a healthy economic growth for our community.
We are dedicated to conducting programs to prevent our island’s youth from getting involved in antisocial activities in the community by reducing the use of intoxicating substances and educating against crime and the destructive consequences of drug use. To engage our use in other activities we offer opportunities in sports and entertainment to the community as well as offering support to the local educational system.
We want to battle the destruction of our natural environment by educating our community about environmental issues especially in terms of waste disposal and recycling.
As part of our environmental orientation we offer programs which focus on marine conservation both in terms of protecting endangered species and rebuilding and maintaining our coral reefs to sustain the marine eco system. We work on engaging the public through participation in our programmes as well as conducting awareness campaigns and educational support in our local schools and community centres.
We intend to conduct our work with respect to the Islamic beliefs of our community and by always making sure that everything we do will adhere to Islamic tradition.
This vision will be enacted through bringing the community together and involve the community in all levels of our organization and our projects.
Naifaru Juvenile was formed as a reaction to the pressing needs of our community and we strive to see our vision come to be trough focusing on the following fields:
As one of our oldest projects, our drug-awareness project has been a huge success which has seen many young people turned away from drugs and into a more sustainable life, choosing education over drugs. This project has been implemented with the help from our staff, volunteers and the local council. We have conducted extensive awareness programs in collaboration with the local schools to target youths who haven’t yet left school. Also, conduct campaigns that are targeted at youths who had left schools and are unemployed.
At Naifaru Juvenile we have always had as a goal to improve the environment of our island. This has been enacted through environmental education and a waste management awareness programme. The educational initiatives have focused on collaboration between us, the local schools, and our island’s parents to educate our youth about the consequences of destroying the environment. Our waste management programme has focused on educating youth and families about proper waste disposal. We have also launched initiatives to eradicate the use of non-bio-degradable plastic bags as well as arranging workshops at schools to show how recycling of various products can be done efficiently.
Sport has proven to be a good tool in reaching the youth of our island. We arrange several annual sports events on our island in volleyball and football/soccer especially. We have also organized island teams to participate in inter-island and inter-atoll cups and tournaments. We go to great lengths to make our sport events matter to our youth and we have won several trophies, and fair play awards. Our sports programmes have successfully brought boys and girls together on equal terms.
As one of our core areas of focus, the economic development of the community is key to our long-term strategy of sustainability. We recognize the fact that the people of this island need help and education in creating businesses. We have pursued this goal by doing small-scale awareness and teaching as well as large-scale construction to better the infrastructure of the island. On a small scale, we have held sowing classes to help local women to set up small tailor businesses. As a major improvement to our islands economic infrastructure, we have constructed a large market where people can set up shops to sell their goods.
