Drug awareness Futsal Tournament Conducted during Eid

During the Eid of October 2012 Naifaru Juvenile hosted a 4 on 4 futsal tournament as part of our on-going drug awareness programme; Strengthening the National Response to Combat Drug Abuse in the Maldives. The programme is sponsored by UNODC and European Union.

The tournament took place on the 26th and 27th of October and saw the participation of 11 teams of local players. There were a total of 12 matches played during the two full days of playing. The tournament was supported by local members of Naifaru Juvenile who acted as officials and referees. The tournament had a strong emphasis on drug awareness: The area was surrounded by banners with anti-drug messages and all the players wore anti-drug mottos on their jerseys. During the tournaments leaflets would be handed out to spectators. The leaflets contained information on drug addiction treatment and general advice.

The winning team was Bank Kanmathi followed by the team Ice Melo. A champion trophy was awarded to the winning team as well as gold medals. The runner-up players received silver medals, and trophies were given to the tournament’s best player and the top scorer. Each participating team received a certificate of participation.

Present at the final match was Mr. Mohamed Karim who is currently in charge of the Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital. Mr. Karim handed out the trophies and certificates to the respective players and teams.

We would like to thank all the people who participated in this event, including officials and referees, our sponsors, the UNODC & EU and Mr. Karim for making this tournament a reality.
